Exploring SmartView 126.96.36.199.400 Submit Data options
With the latest 188.8.131.52 version, Oracle released a new version of SmartView (SmartView 184.108.40.2060). You can download this version here or use this other article I wrote on how to download the latest version of SmartView.
With this new version, you can now Submit data with two new options: ‘Submit Without Refresh’ and ‘Submit Range’. In this article I will show you how to use these two new options and test backwards compatibility of SmartView 220.127.116.11.400 with an 18.104.22.168.500 install.
Submit Without Refresh
With the previous versions, whenever you wanted to Submit data, SmartView was first refreshing data, occasionally returning an error message like “You are in free form mode please perform a refresh” and this one has been VERY frustrating.
Starting with SmartView 22.214.171.124, you can Submit Data without refreshing, nevertheless, Oracle recommends to refresh data before submitting because you can overwrite previous data entries.
To Submit Without Refresh, click on the option selector to the right of the Submit button and you will see two options:
When you select “Submit Without Refresh” SmartView will submit the data sitting on your spreadsheet, no questions asked.
What about backwards compatibility? The documentation states that this feature is only backwards compatible with Essbase releases 126.96.36.199.102 and later but not Planning but I have successfully submitted data without a refresh with Planning 188.8.131.52.500.
Submit Data Range
I have been waiting for this feature for a long time: being able to Submit only certain cells was something I liked a lot with the “old Excel Add-In”.
In this simple example, I only selected the cells where I have 18 and 13 and the cells with 9 and 11 are dirty.
To Submit only certain cells (contiguous or not contiguous), you first select your cells, then click on the selector to the right of the Submit button on the SmartView ribbon and the option will show up.
If you have dirty cells outside of the range you selected, these will be refreshed with the latest value sitting on the database you are submitting data to.
Only the selected cells have been refreshed, dirty cells which were not selected are refreshed with the values sitting on the database.
Like with Submit without refresh, the documentation states that this feature is NOT backwards compatible so you must be on a shiny new 184.108.40.206 release to enjoy it but I have been able to make it work with Essbase and Planning 220.127.116.11.500
These two features are great and work well and they are backwards compatible. I strongly suggest you consider this version you even if you run an older version of Oracle EPM on your servers.
